Week 2 - The Journey of Building Comfort and Strength

This week, we found ourselves navigating the intricate balance between physical therapy, sensory challenges, and emotional well-being. Each step brought its own lessons—some small victories, others moments of struggle. It’s a constant reminder that healing isn’t linear, but it’s in these moments we uncover resilience and strength.
At therapy, the importance of creating safe spaces became a central theme. The idea of a “cozy corner” emerged—a personal retreat where peace and comfort could be found amid the chaos of daily life. The excitement of brainstorming what this space might look like brought smiles and laughter. It’s amazing how something as simple as a fort can spark joy and create a sense of security.
Sensory exploration became another key focus. From discovering preferred smells and textures to identifying triggers that can lead to overload, we worked together to build a toolkit tailored to specific needs. Some tools brought immediate comfort, like cooling towels or soothing vibrations from a handheld massager. Others, like associating emotions with colors and animals, provided new ways to express feelings that words sometimes can’t capture.
Physical therapy sessions brought their own mix of challenges and achievements. Simple activities like playing games, walking on a treadmill, or using virtual reality for movement became opportunities to rebuild strength while keeping things fun and engaging. There were moments of progress—walking a few extra steps, tolerating vibrations longer, and even falling asleep during a massage because of how calming it felt. These may seem like small wins, but they’re monumental in the bigger picture.
Of course, there were setbacks too. Pain, dizziness, and sensory overload sometimes caused sudden shutdowns, leading to seizures or overwhelming fatigue. It’s heartbreaking to watch, but these moments also guide us in finding new strategies to manage and adapt. One of the biggest lessons was learning how vital pacing is—knowing when to push forward and when to step back to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Through it all, the importance of fun shone brightly. Therapy doesn’t always have to feel like work. Playing card games or enjoying a favorite activity on a yoga ball reminded us that joy and laughter are as much a part of healing as any exercise or tool. Setting small, meaningful goals—like walking without pain or looking forward to a day at the beach—keeps the focus on what’s possible, even on the hardest days.
By the end of the week, the progress wasn’t just physical but emotional too. Conversations about designing a cozy corner, creating a pacing schedule, and tailoring sensory breaks felt like building a foundation for something bigger. There’s a long road ahead, but with every new tool, every shared laugh, and every moment of rest, we’re moving closer to a life filled with more comfort and possibility.
Final Thoughts
This journey is challenging, but it’s also deeply rewarding. Every step, no matter how small, is a step forward. If you or someone you love is facing similar challenges, know that you’re not alone. Healing isn’t just about finding solutions; it’s about creating moments of connection, support, and hope along the way.
