Week 7 - Reflecting on Growth, Family Support, and New Experiences
Dec 20, 2024
This week was a mix of exciting activities, meaningful discussions, and preparation for upcoming changes in Sam’s program. It marked the seventh week of his journey, with continued progress and involvement from family members who are learning how to support him better.
The week began with a variety of engaging games, including Cat Chaos, ladderball, "The Floor is Lava," and balancing on a surfboard. These activities were not only fun but also physically challenging, providing opportunities for Sam to build his strength and coordination. The team also discussed scheduling adjustments for the final phase of the program, which will transition to fewer sessions per week starting in January.
One particularly memorable session included playing Jenga while working on strategies for Sam to get up on his own after an intense physical therapy session. The focus on independence and resilience is an ongoing theme, and it’s heartening to see how these lessons are woven into each activity.
This week, Sam's grandmother joined for a session, and it was wonderful to have her involved. The team introduced her to the concept of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), walked her through the progress made over the past seven weeks, and explained how she can help during episodes. She even participated in activities like Cat Chaos, the sound game, ladderball, and balloon tennis, making it a family-centered day filled with laughter and bonding.
Sam also shared a thoughtful gesture by giving out Christmas gifts to his therapy team. It was a touching moment that highlighted his appreciation for the support he’s received from everyone involved in his journey.
Throughout the week, the activities continued to focus on a mix of physical and cognitive challenges. From games like Horse and Coup to working on the FND workbook, each session balanced learning, movement, and emotional support. A particularly lighthearted moment came when Sam teased his mom during a game, showing his playful spirit and the growing confidence he’s gaining through these sessions.
As the week concluded, the team reflected on the progress made over the last seven weeks and planned for the final stretch of the program. Instead of ending abruptly, the decision was made to taper off with four partial weeks starting in January. This approach ensures a smoother transition and gives Sam time to adjust to the changes.
Week 7 was a testament to the power of family, resilience, and thoughtful planning. With one more week to go before the holiday break, we’re looking forward to continuing this journey and seeing what new milestones can be achieved.
